Seattle's Local Favorites: Insider Guide by Chelsea Lankford, Sun Country Explorer
In every city, locals have their go-to spots where like-minded people gather. Living just outside downtown Seattle, I follow a curated route of favorite haunts on each visit. These places attract young families, longtime regulars, and art students chatting over coffee or lunch.

Coffee: Cherry Street Coffeehouse
I discovered this gem during a free performance by my favorite Seattle musician, Ian McFeron. Ideal for solo time, Cherry Street offers a cozy corner to unwind with a book or laptop for hours. Unlike trendy "see-and-be-seen" spots, here you can relax undisturbed. Enjoy quality coffee, snacks, and meals without leaving.
Breakfast: The London Plane
Created by Katherine Anderson and experts from Sitka & Spruce, The Corson Building, Bar Sajor, Old Chaser Farm, and Bar Ferd’nand, The London Plane is a flower shop, bakery, and grocer rolled into one. My top pick? Brunch. Its diverse menu always has savory or sweet options to suit any craving. Bright windows create a serene dining space, perfect rain or shine.

Lunch: Homegrown
Sandwich lovers, meet your new favorite: Homegrown. With multiple Seattle locations offering dairy-free, gluten-free, and meat-free choices, it's a hit in health-focused Pacific Northwest. Beecher’s cheese seals the deal for me. The bright, homey space emphasizes sustainability. Not into sandwiches? Try their customizable salads. Ideal after Fremont Sunday Market or a canal walk.
Happy Hour: Westward
Westward, on Lake Union’s shores, is my absolute favorite Seattle spot. This water-themed eatery delivers exceptional food, quirky Wes Anderson aesthetics, and an unbeatable vibe. Lounge in Adirondack chairs by the private dock, sip an Aperol Spritz with house-made potato chips, and enjoy lake waves. Happy hour feels endless here—perfect for extending the fun.

Shopping: Totokaelo
Capitol Hill buzzes with energy, boasting top bars, eateries, parks, and stellar shopping (second only to downtown). I start at Elliott Bay Books on 10th Avenue, then head to Totokaelo. Opened in 2003, this minimalist boutique curates high-fashion in white, black, structural, and textural styles. Unique pieces ensure standout sophistication. Shoes from Rick Owens, Rachel Comey, and Acne Studios are highlights.
Activity: Moss Bay Kayak
My first kayaking adventure was on Lake Union at Moss Bay Kayak—a spot I return to often. Paddle amid city life and skyline for a thrilling yet relaxing view. Mornings are calm; by 11 a.m., watch seaplanes take off and land. Glide past iconic houseboat communities, like the one from Tom Hanks’ Sleepless in Seattle. You'll leave dreaming of lakeside living!
