National Opera Opens New Home at Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center

From early April, the National Opera will move to its new premises at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) - the new landmark of the city of Athens, which was designed by the great architect Renzo Piano. So, until April 9, the Alternative Stage of the National Opera will present, in its new “home,” a series of productions dedicated to worship entitled “Sacred Music Days,” inspired by the Easter period and including concerts, musical theater, and other performances: “Love, a desert place” (2/4): two song cycles for the great Greek singer Maria Farantouri. “Paraphrasing the sacred canon” (4-5/4): A paraphrase of sacred texts accompanied by a composition and piano improvisation by Antonis Anissegos. “Bluebeard on Via Crucis” (6/4): A parallelism of Bluebeard and Jesus on their “common” path to the Calvary, translated for piano, musical saw, and hammer with works by Bartok and Liszt. “Gioachino Rossini, Petite messe solennelle” (7, 9/4): Religious music, as inspired by the iconic Italian composer. During the same period, the following performances of the Central Stage of the National Opera will be presented: “Landscapes” (1, 2, 4, 5/4): A performance that attempts to bring different styles of neoclassical ballet together in a creative dialogue, directed by Benjamin Millepied, Douglas Lee and Andonis Foniadakis. “Macbeth” (23, 25, 27, 29/4): The opera by Giuseppe Verdi, based on Shakespeare’s play by the same name, directed by Lorenzo Mariani and performed by an excellent cast of prominent Greek actors.
