Why Greater Palm Springs is the Ideal Wedding Destination for LGBTQ+ Couples

Greater Palm Springs is a premier wedding destination for LGBTQ+ couples, renowned for its breathtaking venues, nearly year-round sunshine, and deeply welcoming, gay-friendly culture.

Palm Springs boasts a vibrant LGBTQ+ community and hosted Equality California’s massive wedding reception during the 2004 Pride weekend, celebrating over 200 couples with cake and entertainment.

Why Greater Palm Springs is the Ideal Wedding Destination for LGBTQ+ Couples

Interfaith Minister Cathy O’Connell and her partner Dorry settled in the desert in 2000. Through her company, Celebrations of Joy, O’Connell plans and officiates more than 40 weddings annually in the Coachella Valley, catering to gay and lesbian couples with events ranging from intimate gatherings to extravagant spectacles.

“To illustrate the area’s potential, we organized an unforgettable event for two remarkable men,” Cathy shares. “It began with a travel-themed welcome party at a private complex, where flight-attendant-clad greeters handed out passports poolside. Food stations highlighted countries the couple had visited together. The DJ, dressed as a pilot, spun tracks while a Cirque du Soleil-style acrobat floated in a four-foot bubble in the pool.”

The next day, guests boarded buses from the Colony Palms Hotel to Twin Palms, the Sinatra Estate, greeted by Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra look-alikes. The celebration continued at The Living Desert for cocktails amid giraffes, with the ceremony held as the sun set over the mountains. Guests then returned to the tiki torch-lit Steve Chase patio for dinner with a jazz harpist, before an after-party at a private villa at Colony Palms!

Other memorable ceremonies include candlelit vows in the Riviera Palm Springs’ Wexler Garden, a Chinese garden affair on the Sunset Terrace at Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa, and a Mexican-themed wedding at Hideaway Golf Club.

For couples ready to say “I do” in the desert, Cathy advises planning early—top spots like Parker Palm Springs, Avalon Palm Springs, La Quinta Resort & Club, and Miramonte Resort & Spa book up a year in advance. She also recommends unique options like the Palm Springs Art Museum or scenic outdoor settings for creative touches. The possibilities for wedded bliss are endless in this desert paradise.
