Renowned Artist Graeme Baxter Immortalizes the Stunning Beauty of Greater Palm Springs
World-renowned artist and Greater Palm Springs resident Graeme Baxter has dedicated nearly three decades to capturing the world's most breathtaking golf landscapes. As the official artist for prestigious events like The Ryder Cup, The Open Championship, The Presidents Cup, and the ANA Inspiration (formerly The Kraft Nabisco Championship), as well as the PGA Tour and European Tour, his paintings grace castles, iconic clubhouses from St. Andrews to Augusta National, and private collections of royalty and golf legends.
It took extraordinary inspiration for Baxter, originally from Scotland, to step away from golf art for the first time. That inspiration? The unparalleled beauty of Greater Palm Springs.
How did you decide to paint a landscape of Greater Palm Springs?
G.B.: I love the desert! One reason I moved here from Scotland was the 360-degree views of its inspiring beauty and the vibrant colors I rarely use in my golf landscapes. After three years of planning, discussions, and taking 3,000 to 4,000 photographs from Indian Canyons to the top of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, I was commissioned by Visit Greater Palm Springs to create this painting. It supports their marketing focus on arts and culture in the Coachella Valley.
Where did you find inspiration for this painting?
G.B.: I aimed to feature three key elements: majestic mountains from various vantage points; lush greenery with floribunda roses displayed naturally; and a serene oasis. There's even a subtle golf course in the distance. This valley is a true oasis—barren rock and stone in the mountains give way to vibrant palm trees when viewed from above.
How did you research the project?
G.B.: The final painting drew from 600 to 700 photos, capturing morning and evening light. I also gathered images of every plant included. I start with a clear vision in my mind, though the exact outcome evolves during creation.
What was your ultimate goal?
G.B.: To craft an iconic depiction of Greater Palm Springs that compels viewers to seek out the locations and visit. It feels like a natural evolution from my golf landscapes.
What is your philosophy on art?
G.B.: Landscapes like these—golf courses or deserts—preserve timeless beauty despite changing places. Capturing Greater Palm Springs as a historical piece is truly exciting; it endures forever.
