Explore the DMA’s Dior Exhibition: A Complete Guide for Fashion Enthusiasts
Christian Dior, one of the fashion industry's giants, has transformed the lower level of the DMA into a star‑filled retrospective of French haute couture.
Dior: Paris to the World chronicles seven decades of Parisian elegance, showcasing more than 200 couture gowns, accessories, sketches, and photographs from Dior and the six designers who succeeded him after his death.
Highlights include Elizabeth Taylor’s chiffon evening gown from 1961 and the brocaded silk satin gown worn by Princess Grace of Monaco in 1957. Spanning 12,000 square feet, the exhibit is the DMA’s most ambitious fashion installation to date. Allocate at least an hour to wander through the 11 rooms, each celebrating Dior’s legacy of shaping women’s beauty.
Not sure how to distinguish a Galliano from a Bohan? No worries—here’s a curated list of the most memorable pieces to guide you through the exhibition like a true fashionista.
The New Look
It began with the Bar dress—a wool afternoon gown featuring a pleated skirt—introduced in Dior’s debut 1947 collection. The silhouette emphasized an hourglass figure with a cinched waist, padded hips, and a mid‑length skirt, revitalizing Parisian haute couture after World II.
Office of Dreams
Dior dubbed his studio the “office of dreams.” He sketched hundreds of designs, then translated them into cotton muslin mock‑ups called toiles before each collection. The toiles hang high on a mirrored ceiling, creating an illusion of endless creativity.
Creative Directors
The section honors the six creative directors who followed Dior’s death in 1957—Yves Saint Laurent, who debuted a trapezoidal‑cut dress at 21; John Galliano, known for his theatrical fantasies; and others who each left a distinct mark on the house.
From Paris to the World
The exhibition’s pièce de résistance is the globally inspired “From Paris to the World.” Mannequins line a cathedral‑like barrel vault gallery from floor to ceiling, and visitors walk along a catwalk surrounded by more than 70 mannequins showcasing Dior’s most celebrated couture looks worldwide.
“We wanted to build a reverse catwalk where you are walking the catwalk and you are surrounded by this very grand way with 70 plus looks,” said DMA curator Sarah Schleuning. “There is so much to look at. It is explosive.”
The exhibit features the slinky straw‑green Galliano dress Nicole Kidman wore to the Oscars during the Tom Cruise years, Jennifer Lawrence’s voluminous silk ballgown that tripped her on the 2013 Best Actress podium, Rihanna’s off‑white silk taffeta coat and bustier dress from Cannes, and Lady Gaga’s recent SAG Award gown.
Dior: From Paris to the World runs until September 1 at the DMA. Timed tickets are required for all visitors. Adult tickets cost $20 Tuesday‑Friday and $25 Saturday‑Sunday, with discounts for seniors, students, and military personnel. Children 11 years and younger enter free.
