Rancho Mirage Public Library and Observatory
When
Observatory tours are available Tuesdays through Saturdays at 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Stargazing parties and programs occur at various times monthly.
Activities
The observatory hosts regular tours and stargazing events open to all participants monthly.

Stargazing
Equipped with five telescopes, the facility features a primary instrument in a 360-degree dome and four on the observation deck. The main telescope delivers the brightest, most magnified views up to 50 million light-years away—far beyond the Milky Way's core at 24,000–28,000 light-years.
Deck telescopes offer up to 100x magnification, bringing celestial objects into sharp focus.
During evening stargazing parties, all telescopes are operational, allowing views of planetary nebulae, star clusters, distant galaxies, and planets. "Get the lay of the land, see planetary nebula, clusters of stars, other galaxies and of course other planets," shares Eric McLaughlin, the observatory's full-time astronomer.
Event Tip: Spots are limited to 40 attendees—register early via the Rancho Mirage Library and Observatory e-newsletter or website.
Family Stargazing
Designed for families, these shorter sessions precede standard events. Enjoy telescope views, discussions, and a facility tour in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. "The tone is a little lighter, more fun, and less focused on numbers," notes Eric McLaughlin.
Event Tip: Fully ADA-accessible and wheelchair-friendly. In cooler months, dress in layers.
Daytime Tours
These tours showcase the observatory and a solar telescope, revealing the Sun's surface and hydrogen gas via an H-alpha filter.
Fun Fact: Viewed from above, the building resembles a comet—the main dome as its head and the curved deck as its tail—crafted by the architect.
