The Lensic Performing Arts Center: Santa Fe's Historic Gem Blending History and Entertainment
In the Beginning
The Lensic Performing Arts Center, originally known as the Lensic Theater, opened its doors in 1931 and holds a special place in Santa Fe's heart. Beyond a mere theater, it served as a romantic balcony for first kisses, a grand escape during the Great Depression, and a vibrant vaudeville stage featuring top singers, actors, dancers, and comedians of the era.
Hollywood legends like Claudette Colbert, Judy Garland, Roy Rogers, Errol Flynn, Ronald Reagan, Olivia de Havilland, and the Trapp Family Singers graced its stage or attended performances, cementing its status as a cultural landmark.

A World-Class Performing Arts Center Emerges
In the 1980s, luminaries such as Francis Ford Coppola, Robert Duvall, Sam Peckinpah, Lillian Gish, Ginger Rogers, Ray Bolger, and Gene Kelly visited during the Santa Fe Film Festival.
By the late 1990s, despite its unique pseudo-Moorish Spanish Renaissance architecture and 800+ seats, the theater faced decline. In 1999, visionaries Bill and Nancy Zeckendorf, prominent New York real estate family members who relocated to Santa Fe, spearheaded its revival as a premier performing arts venue.
In 2001, the nonprofit Lensic Performing Arts Center reopened, hosting over 200 magical performances annually. At 93 years old (as of 2024), it retains the energy of a youthful icon.
