Revitalizing the Nellie Lutcher Cultural District: Better Block Event on Enterprise Avenue
Eddie Lewis grew up in what is now the Nellie Lutcher Cultural District, a vibrant hub where everything was within walking distance. "When I was growing up, there were dry cleaners, hotels, restaurants, bars, shoe repair—anything you needed. It was a one-stop shop," he recalls.
Two decades later, Lewis opened the Foundation House right in his childhood neighborhood, investing in its untapped potential for growth.
The Better Block Event on November 8 and 9 aims to spark that same vision. This family-friendly showcase will feature local food, music, and entrepreneurs along the Nellie Lutcher Memorial Parkway—the stretch of Enterprise Avenue between Broad Street and South Division Street. Expect pop-up shops from small businesses, live performances throughout the day, and food trucks offering diverse cuisines.
Designed to inspire residents and visitors alike, the event highlights the district's promise. "Once people see how it could look and grow, it will motivate everyone to recognize the potential here," Lewis says.
Lake Charles has seen Better Block success before. In 2017, Lakeshore Drive got a temporary makeover with a bike lane, sparking citywide discussions on simple improvements for better quality of life.
This event follows suit as a real-world experiment. "We want to test what works and what doesn't to drive lasting community impact," Lewis explains. Post-event surveys will gauge residents' preferences for permanent features and businesses.

Complementing the outdoor festivities, the Foundation House hosts a Zydeco Brunch that weekend with live zydeco music and classic Cajun-Creole dishes. Tickets are required and available here.
Named for jazz legend Nellie Lutcher, the district celebrates her cultural legacy. This Better Block demonstration advances that mission by spotlighting local businesses and attracting new ones to Southwest Louisiana's most culturally rich areas.
