Panorama Music House: Live Music, Delectable Food, and Historic Charm in Downtown Lake Charles

Downtown Lake Charles is alive with vibrant energy, and Panorama Music House plays a starring role. I had the pleasure of touring the venue with owner Jay Ecker, who shared its fascinating history and his passion for crafting an inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels at home.

Rich History in the Making

Housed in a building over 100 years old, Panorama Music House is a true labor of love for Jay Ecker. As the owner of popular Rikenjaks Brewing Company—originally at 331 Broad Street before relocating to 3716 Ryan Street—Jay personally oversaw every renovation detail. The site once served as offices and printing for The American Press and even a trade school in the 1940s. Jay takes pride in preserving this historic gem.

The Iconic Sign's Story

The nostalgic Panorama Music House sign catches every visitor's eye. Originally from the nearby "Panorama Burger House," Jay acquired, restored, and repurposed it with help from Acme Signs. Removing "Burger" revealed "Steak" underneath, uncovering layers of history. Dismantled from its post and rebuilt for wall mounting, it now stands proudly. Jay recently received the CALCA Commendation Award from the Calcasieu Historical Preservation Society for this "Commendable Adaptive Reuse of a Historic Sign," pictured with General Manager Stephen Casanave.

  • Savoring Cartagena: A Shellfish-Free Guide to the Best Eats and Drinks

Given her deathly allergy to shellfish, you might expect Sally Spaulding to skip Colombian fare and stick to the safe stuff. But she was inspired to find the best eats in Cartagena. After all, it was a life and death situation. CARTAGENA, Colombia – Sin mariscos… sin camarones… estoy muy alérgica.”When you’re deathly allergic to shellfish and traveling to Colombia where limited English is spo

  • Cycling the Andes: Conquering High‑Altitude Volcanoes and Meeting Vicuñas

The sun was setting as I followed the road winding up the volcano, but it didn’t matter how many turns I made, the summit was not coming into sight. ‘Richness comes with struggle’ – I repeated those words in my head like an incantation, surprised that I had managed to form a thought between my ragged breaths. I was cycling at 5,000m and my body was desperate for oxygen; I began to muse over the symptoms of altitude sickness. ‘Richness comes with struggle.’ Well, at least I was able to tick t

  • Exploring the Southern Rock Lobster: A Marine Biologist’s Field Adventure

The waves weren’t really putting on much of a show that first evening as we set up camp. But out of the corner of my eye I could see the marine biologist of our trio, pulling his wetsuit out of his overly stuffed pack anyway. He’d seen the subtle signs; a low swell, a slight wind, a boulder-strewn shoreline, the perfect habitat for the southern rock lobster, or locally known as the Tassie crayfish. Within minutes, he was out there; mere moments later, a neoprene-gloved hand thrusted out of t
