The best part, these parcels of joy come in all varieties to suit vegetarians, vegans, carnivore connoisseurs and don’t forget, gluten-free.  Brisbane is brimming with a top selection of savoury and sweet pies for you to get your chops around. Here’s a list of our recommendations to help get your pie on.

This bakery is something out of a dream with shelves and shelves filled with exquisite cakes, bread, pastries and provisions. The food here is a work of art with their pies being no exception. Baked with fresh ingredients using traditional recipes, the pastry has a crispy golden casing and tasty filling - including beef and red wine, chicken and mushroom or lamb and rosemary. If you are looking for something sweet, the home-made apple pie has the perfect amount of crunch and cinnamon flavour.

Pie Town | West End

These American-style sweet and savoury pies are handmade locally in small batches on-premises. The love that goes into these babies is evident in the crispy, flaky pastry and fresh, flavoursome filling. With some decedent and different types to try, we recommend that the salty one amongst you gets on board with the savoury Cheeseburger or Ratatouille pie. For the sweet tooth, you can't go past the Death by Chocolate Mousse Pie, Bourbon Pecan Pie or the Snickers Pie. Gluten-free and Vegan kids rejoice as there are tasty morsels on offer here for you too! Check out the full menu.

Piefection | Coorparoo & Mount Gravatt

The mouth-watering pie creations found here have been perfected over time by chef Matt Roman. These pastries fall into the gourmet category, leaving the humble servo pie for dead. High on the must-try list is the Jack Daniels BBQ Pork Rib pie or Bundaberg Rum Runner served with mushy peas, creamy mashed potatoes and gravy – boy doesn’t that sound out of control. Keep an eye out for the special of the week where the chefs get inspired to whip-up new and devastatingly delicious creations.

Jacob’s Bakery | Multiple locations

This family style bakery serves fresh bread, cakes and an extensive range of quality pies. With flavours you simply can’t resist including chilli steak and vegetable, chicken and vegetable, lamb and rosemary, beef and mushroom or beef, bacon and cheese, you may have a hard time choosing just one. Don’t know what to pick? The traditional mince pie with thick gravy and well-cooked pastry is always a winner.

Yatala Pies | Yatala

Trust us, these pies are worth the drive. Yatala Pies is a Queensland institution that has grown from a tiny bakery along the Gold Coast highway to serving over 3,500 pies a day. Baked fresh daily, choose from several varieties including vegetarian, steak and mushroom, steak bacon, cheese, Chicken and vegetable or even the Tradie: steak, bacon, cheese, tomato and egg. Mushy beans or potato mash is a necessary extra as well as a golden-crusted dessert pie for after.

Gluten Free 4 U | Mt Gravatt

For delicious gluten-free pies, look no further. The pastry is crisp, and the filling is jam-packed full of flavour. It is rare to find gluten-free pastry that holds up to its gluten-full counterpart and to our delight, these do. No soggy bottoms or greasy pastry here. The chilli and cheese pie is a must-try, not overly spicy, but just enough kick for that good lip tingle. You also can't go wrong with the classic beef with rich gravy.

Muzza’s Pies | Coorparoo

One of the most Aussie names on the block and well known for providing excellent pies to the people of Brisbane. Muzza’s pies are prepared fresh daily using local ingredients making them chunky and full of tasty goodness. With over ten types of steak pie and plenty of other flavours to choose from (smoked fish, vegetarian and chicken and apricot included), you are bound to find a golden filled parcel that suits your tastes.

Banneton Bakery | Woolloongabba, Ashgrove & Camp Hill

Banneton Bakery is known for its outstanding pastry and a fantastic cup of coffee, but their secret weapon is their the pies. Keeping it simple with only three flavours, we suggest the slow cooked steak and Guinness pie encased within a crumbling golden pastry.

Gerbino’s | Ashgrove

This traditional Italian bakery is a family run business that first opened in New Farm in 2003. Their traditional Italian desserts are fantastic, but the reason this one made the list, is due to the delicious apple pie - caramel brown and crunchy on the outside with perfectly cooked apple on the inside. It’s impossible to have just one slice.

Mum’s Bakehouse | Kedron

Who makes better pies than mum? That’s right, no one, so for a huge range of baked pies, look no further than Mum’s Bakehouse. Expect crunchy, golden pastry filled with chunky filling – all the ingredients needed to make the perfect pie. Our favourite? The Ned Kelly, Aussie in name and nature with bacon, cheese and egg mixed through the filling.

Golden King Bakery | Ashgrove

You may have come for the banh mi, but once you try their pies, you’ll have a second reason never to leave this bakery. With gravy that holds its shape and flavour that smacks you in the face, you’ll feel like royalty with such a noble offering. This pie is slightly bigger than usual (bargain), and you can choose between a normal pastry or potato-top pie. With classic flavours like plain chunky steak, chicken and vegetable and tomato with steak you can’t go wrong.

Award-winning pies? Don’t mind if I do. All the pastry’s on offer at Beefy’s are made fresh daily with local ingredients. The Thai green curry and curried steak are particularly popular, and the classic steak pie will not steer you wrong. The good news here is they also sport an award-winning gluten-free pie, so all your coeliac and wheat intolerant friends can join in on the pastry party.
