Kauapea Beach: Kauaʻi's Breathtaking 'Secret' Paradise
Despite its 'secret' moniker, Kauapea Beach is one of Kauaʻi's most renowned and stunning shorelines. Lacking signage, access requires a steep 10-minute hike down from the cliffs. Below, powdery golden sands extend over a mile toward Kilauea Point, curving around two rock reefs. Powerful shore breaks and strong currents make swimming hazardous except on the calmest summer days.
The beach's allure lies in its dramatic beauty: a sandy ocean floor, crystal-clear waters, and unforgettable sunsets. Once a popular (illegal) nudist spot, nudity is now rare. Skilled local surfers tackle the waves, particularly during winter swells that heighten dangers. Avoid entering even knee-deep water if conditions are rough, and steer clear of rocky outcrops known for drownings.
From Kilauea, head north 0.5 miles past the gas station, turn makai (seaward) onto Kalihiwai Road, then right onto the first dirt road after the bend. Park at the end and follow the steep trail through wild plum trees to the beach.
