Athabasca Glacier Guide: Trails, Ice Explorer Tours, and Safety Essentials
The Athabasca Glacier's tongue stretches from the Columbia Icefield to within easy walking distance of the road opposite the Icefield Centre. Access it on foot or by Ice Explorer all-terrain vehicle. It has retreated about 2 km since 1844, when it reached the rock moraine north of the road. Reach the toe via the 1.8 km Forefield Trail from the Icefield Centre, followed by the 1 km Toe of the Glacier Trail. Park at the start of the latter trail for convenience.
You may stand on the small roped ice section, but never cross the warning tape—the glacier hides crevasses, and fatalities have occurred despite common disregard.
For safe Columbia Icefield exploration, join Athabasca Glacier Icewalks. They provide gear and guides for the 3-hour basic tour or 6-hour extended adventure. Minimum age: 7 years.
The popular Columbia Icefield Adventure uses a hybrid bus-truck to reach the ice for a 25-minute walk. Dress warmly, wear sturdy shoes, and sample fresh glacial water. Buy tickets at the Icefield Centre or online; tours every 15-30 minutes.
