Discover Huatusco: Veracruz’s Coffee Heritage & Scenic Mountain Retreat

Explore the High Mountains region of Veracruz and immerse yourself in a road with exuberantly green landscapes and some ravines to reach Huatusco, a beautiful coffee-growing place that combines history, culture, and tradition.

 

The town is located at the foot of the Barranca de Chichiquila with a fantastic view of the Pico de Orizaba Volcano, only 18 kilometers ( 11 miles ) from the town of Coscomatepec and 125 kilometers ( 78 miles ) from the Port of Veracruz.

 

Due to its privileged geographical location within the coffee belt of the central sierra of Veracruz, it is placed as one of the municipalities with the best climatic conditions for the cultivation of the grain and the largest producer of coffee. To drink a cup of coffee at any time is to enjoy the flavor of Huatusco.

 

In a peaceful environment with the smell of coffee, enjoy a walk through Parque Ignacio Zaragoza, which was inaugurated in 1898 and is surrounded by beautiful palm trees. In the middle of the park is a beautiful kiosk and around it is some benches. From here you can contemplate the Parroquia de San Antonio de Padua (San Antonio de Padua Parish Church), considered the tallest in the state of Veracruz since it is 35 meters (115 feet) high, as well as having a sculpture of San Antonio de Padua that is 9 meters (30 feet) high.

 

On one side of the parish is El Palacio Municipal (The Municipal Palace), construction of 1828. Further on you can see the facade of the Teatro Solleiro (Solleiro Theater), which was the theater of the “porfiriato” and which was built in 1882. El Templo de Santa Cecilia (Temple of Saint Cecilia) was built by the Spaniards, but it was not finished in its totality.

 

Its rich prehispanic cuisine has formed the town's great cultural and historical heritage, among the dishes you should try are the tlatonile, similar to the mole made from sesame or pipian; and the cozamalo tamales, which are round, small and thin made with corn; the chicatanas, which are ants with a very high nutritional power.

 

As for their handicrafts, don't forget to go shopping, they work in precious woods and coffee trees, as well as ceramics, candles, and embroidery.
