Explore El Saucillo: A Hidden Eco‑Valley Near Zimapán

Just 20 minutes from the Magic Town of Zimapán and 5 from the hydroelectric dam, there’s an extraordinary valley called El Saucillo. You might think that this is an inhospitable place, but this is in fact an ecological zone that has survived thanks to the inhabitants of the region.

 

They have created a cactus garden and a comunitary museum with archeological vestiges from the Otomi culture. They also offer tours for practising rappel in the walls of the canyon and an area for camping and watching the stars. Since there is no light pollution you will be able to see the celestial vault in all its splendor.

 

The big secret of The Saucillo is that it keeps a replica of a black hair mummy that was found in the zone. The National Institute of Anthropology and History is still analyzing the original remains to determine the antiquity of the mummy.

 

You can not leave The Saucillo without knowing the “Eternal Love Stone”, named like this for its heart shape. As the legend goes if couples kiss here, their love will last forever.
