The Crawford W. Long Museum commemorates Dr. Long's discovery of ether's use as an anesthetic on this site March 30, 1842. The three-building complex houses a medical gallery honoring Dr. Long with exhibits of personal family heirlooms, as well as displays showing the development of modern anesthesia.

The museum features not only 19th century medical equipment, but examples of furniture, textiles and exhibits on the history of education, business and religious life in Jackson County. Visitors to the museum can explore the Pendergrass General Store, a dry-goods store opened by the Pendergrass family in 1858 and the only surviving pre-Civil War business structure in Jefferson.
