The Wren's Nest is the Queen Anne Victorian home of Joel Chandler Harris, recorder of the Br'er Rabbit stories. Located in Atlanta's historic West End, the Wren's Nest is Atlanta's oldest house museum and is currently in its 100th year of operation. The mission of the Wren's Nest is to preserve the legacy of Joel Chandler Harris and the heritage of African-American folklore. Docents provide tours Tuesday through Saturday, and our storytellers tell every Saturday at 1 p.m. and by appointment.

The Wren's Nest sits on more than 2 acres of land just southwest of downtown Atlanta. Our natural grass amphitheatre seats more than 800 and is capable of hosting weddings, concerts and other special events.

  • Unveiling the Essence of Manas

I cower behind my bike, hoping it will shield me from a flustered flock of sheep launching off the steep mountainside above. Whoosh. Thump. Over the track and my head they jump, hurtling towards the creek below. My mind flashes forward to home – and to the distinct possibility of my husband answering the door to the police. ‘We’re sorry to inform you that your wife has been killed by a flock of freaked-out sheep.’ Marauding sheep are, however, the least of our worries. • Final Hours: The Epic Record‑Setting Atlantic Row

In March this year, five amateur rowers set two world records after becoming the first team to row unsupported from mainland Europe to mainland South America. Oliver Bailey recounts their final day, navigating through Venezuelan waters renowned for drug trafficking and piracy. The final 24 hours of our record-setting trans-Atlantic row were the most memorable. For the first time in 50 days I could differentiate tones other than the blue-grey hues of the sky and the ocean. When I exited the

  • Return to the Arctic: Trekking the Brooks Range

Our third day in the expansive wilderness of the Brooks Range found us returning from an afternoon hike to the domed pingo visible from our camp on the banks of Noatak River. Trekking alongside us were Jim Slinger and Andrew ‘Tip’ Taylor, two men with whom we’d exchanged emails over the past few years but only now were getting to know on a more personal level. The hike provided a much-needed opportunity to stretch our legs and break away from where we’d been tethered, waiting for the plane t
