Seattle Filmmaker Honored with Seattle Story Award to Craft 'Love Letter to Seattle'

Home to entrepreneurs, musicians, artists and filmmakers far up in the NorthLeft corner of the United States, Seattle has always been a beacon for the independently-minded. Given that, it’s no surprise that it has also been long recognized as one of the world’s most creative cities.

But rather than just talk about the city’s creative spirit, this year we’re activating it.

As part of Film Independent Spirit Awards, the Seattle Story Award is being granted to a filmmaker who exhibits innovation, diversity and uniqueness of vision while having a history of transforming perspectives through rich stories; because that’s what we believe this city does itself for anyone who has spent time here.

Through a nomination process that included a long list of candidates, Matty Brown emerged as the winner of the award at Film Independent’s Nominee Brunch event, hosted by actors Alia Shawkat and John Cho on January 9, 2018.

Matty has called Seattle home for over a decade and cut his teeth on travel content and travel advertising as well as commercial work for brands like Samsung and Lincoln. While he has also created other short film projects, this project gives him a broad canvas on which to create and exposes him to an entirely new audience and peer group.

As the winner, Matty will receive a grant to create a short film inspired by Seattle’s independent spirit and his film’s teaser will premiere during the March 3 broadcast of the Independent Spirit Awards on IFC.

We can’t wait to share his #LoveLetterToSeattle with the world.
