Kauai Travel Guide: Where Adventure Meets Relaxation on Hawaii's Garden Isle
With multiple visits to Hawaii under my belt, my recent adult trip to Kauai drew on Travelzoo colleagues' wisdom for the ultimate mix of relaxation and exploration.
For first-timers, divide your stay between Kauai's north and south shores, specifically Princeville and Poipu. This lets you savor the lush north's stunning beaches and Na Pali Coast near Princeville, plus Poipu's legendary sunsets and easy access to Waimea Canyon.
Rent a car to unlock Kauai's full magic—cruise at your pace to hidden beaches down red dirt roads, cross iconic one-way bridges, or reach prime snorkeling like Tunnels Beach.
Princeville suits adventure lovers. While Hanalei Bay offers drive-up access, hike to remote spots like Secret Beach—15 minutes south via unmarked dirt road, then a 10-minute cliff descent—for a private mile of pristine sand.
- Top hike: Trek the red-dirt road to Queen's Bath, volcanic tide pools teeming with sea turtles. Swim the main pool at low tide; visit on clear days only.
- Best views: Poipu Beach's southern tip delivers unobstructed Pacific sunsets, island-free horizons.
- Best shaved ice: Hee Fat General Store in Kapaa (8 miles north of Lihue Airport) serves unbeatable Lava Flow (pineapple, coconut, strawberry over macadamia ice cream)—4.5 Yelp stars.
- Hidden gem attraction: Waimea Canyon, "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," merits a 1-hour drive from Poipu. Hike trails or hit the lookout for waterfall vistas.
- Underrated dinner: Duane’s Ono-Char Burger off Kuhio Highway (midway Princeville-Wailua). Teriyaki burger and onion rings are musts.
- Where to stay: Opt for luxurious resorts or homey condos with kitchens and family amenities.
- Best time to visit: Year-round appeal, but September shines with mild weather, fewer crowds, and deals—especially on quieter Kauai, where you might claim an entire beach.
