State Department Urges Early U.S. Passport Renewal as Thousands Expire Soon
In 2006 and 2007, the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative took effect, requiring passports for the first time when returning by air from the Caribbean, Mexico, Canada, and Bermuda.
This sparked a surge in first-time applications, and those 10-year passports are now due for renewal over the next 24 months.
To avoid processing delays, the State Department encourages submitting renewals early this year for quick turnaround.
Additionally, many countries require at least six months' passport validity for entry, underscoring the need for timely renewals.
