Luxury Upgrade at St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort, Puerto Rico: Our 15th Anniversary Review
The Suite Life: When in Doubt, Upgrade
My wife and I typically opt for comfortable 4-star or upscale 3-star hotels—convenient spots with reliable Wi-Fi, good locations, and family-friendly pools when traveling with kids. However, for milestone occasions, we indulge in true luxury. Our recent 15th wedding anniversary qualified, following similar celebrations on our Kauai honeymoon island for our 5th and 10th. With older children and packed schedules, a long-haul flight to Hawaii from the East Coast wasn't feasible.
Puerto Rico wasn't our initial choice, but the St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort promotion changed that. Direct flights from New York to San Juan make it ideal for a rejuvenating long weekend without exhaustion. Our fond memories of the St. Regis Princeville in Kauai sealed the deal—especially at 70% off peak rates.
We selected an upgrade to the premium Oceanfront King Suite (typically $1,000/night). This splurge proved unforgettable. Among the finest suites we've experienced, it resembled a lavish beachfront apartment: expansive lanai with ocean views, marble floors, dual bathrooms (surpassing our home), ample closets, a deep soaking tub, and a spacious shower.
Bottom line: The upgrade was well worth it.

Suite perks included dedicated butler service, though we underutilized it as first-timers. Resort-wide 5-star hospitality was impeccable—attentive staff anticipated needs, like anniversary chocolate-dipped strawberries and wine.
Traveling during hurricane season, Hurricane Matthew brought rain and clouds, yet it didn't detract from our enjoyment or the St. Regis excellence.
Essential Tips for Your Stay:
- Prioritize the upgrade. Oceanfront King Suites offer unparalleled luxury, service, and proximity to the beach, spa, and main dining areas.
- Explore resort amenities fully. This expansive property features golf, spa, pristine beach, kayaking/paddleboarding on the lagoon, nature trails, and bikes. The deal waived the $75 nightly resort fee.
- Join the sunset Champagne sabering ritual. A elegant daily tradition to toast the day.
- Try the French toast at breakfast/brunch. Exceptional, alongside stellar mojitos and Puerto Rican rum-based dark & stormies.
- Plan butler service uses in advance. Guests arranged pizza deliveries, custom meals, shoe shines, pressing, and packing—elevating convenience.
- Family-friendly vibe. Pools, beach, and lagoon activities suit kids without the exclusivity that can feel unwelcoming.
- Rent a car. 30 minutes from San Juan; enables easy off-resort exploration (shuttle available).
- Leverage concierge expertise. Excellent off-site suggestions; we hiked El Yunque and lunched nearby.
- Extend your stay. Three nights felt short—add days for bioluminescent bay or spa.
- Request late checkout. Luxury resorts accommodate; we maximized our final day.
- Visit El Yunque National Forest. 20 minutes away—U.S.'s only tropical rainforest. Allow half-day for the winding drive and 1-mile hike to La Mina Falls (easy trail with paths/steps; wear sturdy shoes). Expect crowds but rewarding views.
- Maximize accessibility. Direct flights and 4-hour door-to-resort time beat distant spots like Kauai; among affordable Caribbean options.
- Embrace variable weather. Hurricane season discounts reflect risks, but indoor/outdoor amenities ensure enjoyment—we thrived despite rain.
Upgrading transformed our anniversary into pure indulgence. Consider it for yours.
