Dhading, Nepal: Heartwarming Local Encounters and Photographer's Favorites
Dhading stands out as one of my top photography destinations in Nepal. The locals are incredibly warm and welcoming, often delighted to have their portraits captured.
Traveling to Nepal as a photographer offers unique joys, especially with locals—particularly children—who love being photographed. This enchanting girl, no older than three, watched us with wide, curious eyes. In the remote mountain town of Dhading, foreigners are rare, seen mostly as occasional English-teaching volunteers.
She ventured alone up the mountainside from her home below. While this freedom for young children might surprise visitors from the US or Europe, it's a common sight in Nepal.
Photo Tip: Always put children at ease before shooting. If your Nepali is limited to “hello,” a genuine smile, wave, or playful gesture can break the ice.
Shooting at eye level is ideal for children, but here I photographed from above to highlight the dramatic mountain height and distant house.
