Morro Negrito Surf Camp Review: Last-Minute Accommodation Change and Refund Challenges

We booked a surf trip months in advance through panamasurfcamp.com (operating as Morro Negrito Surf Camp), paying $1,330 (excluding flights) for an island getaway with uncrowded waves.

Three days before departure, owner Steve emailed us a major update: "Instead of staying at the camp on the peninsula/island, you will be spending the week at Puerto Morro Negrito on the mainland."

This change raised serious concerns. The email lacked details, photos, or information about the new mainland accommodations, despite daily boat transfers to surf spots remaining the same.

Multiple inquiries about the timing of this disclosure went unanswered. Instead, Steve suggested contacting a "5-time client" who reportedly preferred the new location and directed us to his Facebook page showing island camp rebuilding efforts that began months earlier—suggesting he knew of the issue at booking.

Online reviews of the camp and owner were mixed to negative, adding to our hesitation despite the appeal of uncrowded waves.

The refund process proved frustrating. Steve initially offered a full refund if unsatisfied. After requesting it, we received emails from the "client" instead of Steve. Subsequent refund requests were ignored until we insisted.

Steve then replied: "Unfortunately, it is not going to happen today. I have spent about $2,000 in gasoline, food and supplies... That should be available in about a week."

We disputed the charge via credit card, as the service was no longer provided—a process that succeeded but highlighted poor business practices. Full upfront payment before arrival is unusual; deposits with balance on-site are standard.

If considering Morro Negrito Surf Camp with Steve Thompson, use a credit card for protection and anticipate potential changes.

Our Panama trip incurred extra flight fees due to a national holiday. Better options exist in Santa Catalina, Bocas del Toro, and other spots.
