Kona Kai Resort on Shelter Island: An Affordable Beachfront Escape in San Diego
Discover an affordable beachfront stay in San Diego at the stunning Kona Kai Resort on Shelter Island, offering luxury without the high price tag.
While our travels often involve jam-packed itineraries to maximize exploration, they rarely provide true rest. To recharge, we prioritize short getaways to familiar nearby spots where we can unwind without the pressure to sightsee.
After a hectic year of travel, we craved a relaxing weekend close to home—and found the ideal retreat just minutes from downtown San Diego.

Small-Town Charm in the Heart of a Big City
We typically skip downtown San Diego in favor of the quaint North County beach towns. Shelter Island, a neighborhood in Point Loma just west of downtown, was a refreshing new discovery. Kona Kai Resort sits directly on this 1.2-mile 'island,' connected to the mainland by a causeway along Shelter Island Drive.
Known for boat launches—popular with surfers chasing uncrowded waves—and as a haven for luxury yachts due to its deep-water marina, the area buzzes with activity. Exploring near the resort, we encountered mostly locals: runners on the harbor boardwalk, couples strolling, and evening crowds enjoying live music and drinks at the Vessel Bar.

Experience Kona Kai Resort on Shelter Island
Choose bay-view or marina-view rooms at Kona Kai Resort. Beyond the breathtaking harbor sunrises, our favorite feature is direct access to one of California's rare private beaches—perfect for bonfires right outside your door.
On Saturday at 8 p.m., staff ignited our beach fire pit and delivered s'mores fixings for a cozy evening under the stars.

Endless water activities keep you on-site: paddleboarding, kayaking, sailboat charters, or pier fishing. The expansive pool overlooks the marina and includes a ping-pong table and oversized checkers. Look forward to the summer concert series with free live music on the private beach.

Bed & Breakfast Package Delight
Second-favorite? The exceptional breakfasts at Vessel Restaurant, where every dish boasts creative flair and impeccable presentation.
Their Huevos Rancheros reimagines the classic with corn tortillas, black beans, and queso fresco (reminiscent of Oaxaca cheese)—so good, I ordered it twice. The Pulled Pork Benedict with green chili hollandaise was equally unforgettable.

Sunday brunch costs $29, with add-ons like $10 bottomless mimosas or $14 Bloody Mary bar. Pair it with lunch options like their signature fish tacos.

The 'Bed & Breakfast Package' adds just $10 per night over the 'Best Flexible Rate,' including daily breakfast for two adults, complimentary parking, tax, and gratuity—saving over $80 on a two-night stay.
