Just 20 km northwest of Tahiti, Moorea is a volcanic gem in French Polynesia—a paradise for nature enthusiasts. Blanketed in lush greenery, encircled by turquoise lagoons, and boasting world-class snorkeling and scuba spots, it's often hailed as one of Earth's most beautiful islands.
Moorea had long topped my travel bucket list, but I knew Tahiti's reputation for high costs. Fortunately, with smart planning, it's entirely feasible on a budget. Drawing from my personal experience, here's how to make it happen.
How to Get to Moorea
Fly into Papeete, Tahiti's capital and French Polynesia's main hub. From North America or Europe, Los Angeles offers convenient direct flights.
From Papeete, Air Tahiti flights connect to Moorea, but I recommend the ferry for savings—it's nearly as quick and cheaper. Aremiti ferries cost about $15 USD one-way; taking a vehicle adds ~$42 (bring registration). Terevau is even more affordable at ~$11 one-way.
Reach the ferry terminal from Papeete Airport in 20 minutes via taxi.
Best Time to Visit Moorea
May to October is dry season—ideal for beaches but peak tourism drives up prices. November to April (low season) brings warmth with some humidity and rain, yet lower rates and easier bookings for tours.
Getting Around Moorea
Choose accommodations with free bikes or near towns for walkability. Renting a car full-time isn't necessary with water-focused activities, but I rented one for a day to explore inland.
Saving Money on Food in Moorea
Dining is a major expense, so skip pricey hotel restaurants. If breakfast isn't included, head to town—my group enjoyed $10/person meals. Opt for kitchenette rentals or central spots near groceries and eateries (alcohol is cheaper at stores).
When to Splurge in Moorea
Stay waterfront for the full experience. We chose Manava Beach Resort's overwater bungalows, but alternatives save significantly. Splurge on humpback whale snorkeling (seasonal) or scuba diving.
