Why Wearing a Mask is Essential for Centre County's Economic Recovery
“Wear a mask.” This simple three-word directive has sparked intense debate—questioned by some and challenged by others. For Centre County restaurants, shops, and businesses hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and fighting to stay afloat, masking is non-negotiable.
The coronavirus has devastated the economy, especially the hospitality sector. In Centre County, where tourism drives growth, pre-COVID data shows tourism supported over 5,120 jobs. Visitors spent $809.1 million in 2018 (up from $724 million in 2017), ranking Happy Valley in Pennsylvania's top quarter of counties. The industry also generated $42.4 million in state and local taxes.
In 2020, the picture changed dramatically. By April, nearly half a million unemployed Pennsylvanians were from hospitality. Centre County saw the sharpest unemployment spike in the CEDA-COG Region, with hospitality (hotels, restaurants, attractions) at 20.4%.
After over two months of shutdowns, entering the “green” phase on May 29 brought relief. Restrictions remained, but businesses reopened under capacity limits and strict health protocols. Staying green demands collective effort to curb COVID-19 spread.
Local businesses have invested heavily in PPE, sanitation, and staff training—not just to comply, but to rebuild customer confidence and restore jobs.
They strive to deliver exceptional experiences amid uncertainty.
For five months, Centre County operated far from normal. Enforcing masks burdens staff, but it's vital for survival.
Happy Valley's philanthropic spirit shines in supporting community causes. Wearing a mask (if medically able) and following protocols helps businesses focus on safe, top-tier service.
As businesses pledge health and safety, the HVAB urges the community to pledge support amid ongoing challenges.
With the virus persisting, economic vulnerabilities remain. Recovery starts with staying green, aiming for post-pandemic normalcy. For our shared future: Please wear a mask.
