Huntington Beach State Park: Where Pristine Beaches, Historic Atalaya Castle, and Abundant Wildlife Converge
The Myrtle Beach area boasts two exceptional South Carolina State Parks: Myrtle Beach State Park and Huntington Beach State Park. As a longtime outdoor enthusiast and annual pass holder, I frequently visit both parks year-round—a smart investment for South Carolina residents seeking unlimited access to nature.
Situated near Murrells Inlet and Pawleys Island on the southern Grand Strand, Huntington Beach State Park offers a wide, pristine beach, over 300 bird species, diverse wildlife, scenic nature trails, and an informative nature center. Spanning 2,500 acres, this coastal preserve is most famously home to Atalaya Castle, the Moorish Revival winter residence of philanthropist Archer Huntington and acclaimed sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington. The couple's enduring legacy includes the park and neighboring Brookgreen Gardens, preserving their vision for future generations.
The park's nature trails and educational programs are highlights—my first crabbing experience was through one of their guided sessions. Yet, as an adult, Atalaya Castle captivates me most. Constructed during the Great Depression by local workers to hurricane standards, it housed Anna Hyatt Huntington's studio, where many iconic sculptures were created. Several of these masterpieces grace Brookgreen Gardens nearby.
Beyond its cultural and historical significance, the park is simply a joy to explore. With over 100 campsites, it's ideal for families; I have fond childhood memories of camping here, including ranger-led ghost stories around the fire. Non-campers can easily pair a visit with Brookgreen Gardens for a full day trip from central Myrtle Beach. Dog-friendly policies allow leashed pets nearly everywhere, except the north beach end, park buildings, and Atalaya.
Entry fees are affordable: $5/adult, $3/youth (6-15), free for children 5 and under. Add $2/person (over 6) for Atalaya tours (highly recommended). Programs vary seasonally, including an annual arts festival—check the official calendar at www.southcarolinaparks.com/huntington-beach for updates.
