75 Years of Iconic Charm: Celebrating the Gay Dolphin Gift Cove s Anniversary in Myrtle Beach

The Gay Dolphin holds a cherished and transformative place in the hearts of Myrtle Beach visitors and locals alike. As the city has evolved over decades, this beloved Boardwalk staple has remained a steadfast constant.

Founded in 1946 as a modest gift shop by visionary entrepreneur Justin Plyler, who dreamed of Myrtle Beach as an affordable haven for family gatherings and traditions. Plyler's ventures shaped the area's entertainment scene, including a mini-golf course, three inns, a reptile show, Myrtle Beach's first aquarium, a monkey and gorilla exhibit, a rifle range, Kiddieland, a theme park with bumper cars, a pony rink—and, of course, the iconic Gay Dolphin.

Originally named the “Shell Craft Gift Shop,” it was destroyed by Hurricane Hazel in 1954 but meticulously rebuilt, including its signature glass tower. Operated by Justin and his wife Eloise, alongside children Kay Plyler and Justin “Buz” Plyler—who now leads the shop—the Gay Dolphin endures as one of the Grand Strand's oldest family-owned businesses.
