Discover standout OBX restaurants that deliver casual beach vibes, affordability, and the freshest local seafood—perfect for your Outer Banks vacation. Flip-flops and shorts are welcome (no dress code), capturing the relaxed essence of OBX dining.
Recently invited to explore the Outer Banks food scene, I was amazed by the explosion of quality spots since my last visit years ago. Who knew OBX had evolved into such a foodie haven?
BEST OBX RESTAURANTS
From hundreds of options, here are my top picks across the Outer Banks. You'll find delicious meals wherever you roam in this stunning beach destination.
LIFESAVING STATION AT SANDERLING RESORT
Established in 1874 as Caffey's Inlet Lifesaving Station No. 5, this historic site helped rescue shipwreck victims along North Carolina's treacherous coast. The original building burned down and was rebuilt in 1899; it was decommissioned after the Coast Guard took over in 1915.

Now beautifully renovated at Sanderling Resort, the Lifesaving Station offers a casual menu of Southern coastal cuisine using local, organic ingredients for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Comfort foods like fried chicken and biscuits share the spotlight with upscale seafood such as seared sea scallops on caramelized leek polenta with heirloom carrots and balsamic glaze. It's renowned for OBX's best breakfast and features an à la carte Sunday brunch. Condé Nast Traveler named Sanderling the top NC coast resort for good reason—seasonal specials highlight the freshest catches, like this exquisite lemon tart.

SAM & OMIE’S
Opened in 1937 by local fishermen, Sam & Omie’s in Nags Head remains a go-to for authentic OBX fare, serving hearty breakfasts to anglers and visitors alike for over 70 years.
For seafood lovers at breakfast, the crab Benedict is a must—skip the menu if you know what's good! Don't miss the massive cinnamon bun; share it to avoid devouring it solo.

Expect waits, but staff happily serve coffee or cocktails while you watch tantalizing trays pass by. From burgers and sandwiches to prime rib or piled-high local seafood, satisfaction is guaranteed.
DIAMOND SHOALS RESTAURANT
Ideal before or after Cape Hatteras Lighthouse visits, Diamond Shoals serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Start with a local cold beer.

Celebrated for seafood, choose between crab cakes or a pound of shrimp. Award-winning clam chowder and Hatteras Island's only sushi bar shine, alongside the Fresh Catch chalkboard. Open daily with a kids' menu and desserts.

BLUE MOON BEACH GRILL
This local favorite prioritizes dine-in for hot, fresh meals. Expect shrimp and grits, filet mignon, or the Truck Stop: pan-fried pork loin with skillet potatoes, onions, pan gravy, and optional fried egg.
The bouillabaisse—local fish and shellfish in spicy saffron-white wine tomato broth—is divine.

WAVERIDERS COFFEE, DELI & PUB
Step into Waveriders for a Friends-like vibe: order at the counter and relax. Breakfast highlights include the Eddie panini (egg, smoked Gouda, tomato, onion, avocado, balsamic on everything bagel) or creative wraps. Pair with the latte of the day or Bikini Bottom Smoothie (pineapple, cucumber, honey).

Lunch options: build-your-own sandwiches or Beet & Gorgonzola Salad. Fresh pastries, 9 craft beers on tap, daily hours, and online ordering available.
LOST COLONY BREWERY & CAFE
Discovered at the Seafood Festival, this Manteo spot on Queen Elizabeth Street brews eight beers in a lively atmosphere.

Menu classics: Shrimp and Crab Au Gratin, Surf and Turf. Appetizers like baked brie with almonds, apples, and baguette.
BIG BUCKS ICE CREAM
Four locations, including the recommended Manteo waterfront. All ice creams, sorbets, and sherbets are scratch-made with seasonal flavors like butter pecan or chocolate hazelnut. Instagrammable cookie dough! Espressos, smoothies, chocolates, custom cakes, and online gift boxes.
SCUPPERNONG VINEYARDS
Award-winning wines merit a stop. Complimentary tastings (½ oz pours) include popular varietals, history, and pairings.

OUTER BANKS BREWING STATION
A must-visit: wind-powered brewery mimicking a historic Lifesaving Station. Tours, 11 taps, or flights available.

Fun menu: starters (wings, shrimp, Jalapeño Bottle Caps), salads/sandwiches for lunch, upscale dinner (scallops, local beef). Vegetarian-friendly.
CAPTAIN ANDY’S OCEANFRONT TIKI BAR AND GRILL
Beach's largest tap list (30 beers). Ocean views inside or out. Shareable Nachos Supreme, calamari with marina sauce, seafood platters, sandwiches.
OWENS’ RESTAURANT
OBX's oldest family-owned spot since 1946. Maritime history artifacts transport you back in time. Coastal cuisine with regional ingredients: Crab Stack (jumbo lump crab, mango, tomato, avocado), Shrimp and Grits, Certified Angus Beef options. Served with cheese crock, hushpuppies; save room for dessert.

DUCK DONUTS
America's fastest-growing donut shop with 12 flavors or custom: vanilla cake base, choose coating/topping/drizzle. Limited specials, coffee.

ONEAL’S SEA HARVEST IN WANCHESE
Freshest seafood from Wanchese harbor—where OBX restaurants source. Retail: fish, crabs, shrimp, scallops. Lunch (11-3:30) sandwiches, seafood, desserts.
OUTER BANKS DISTILLING/KILL DEVIL RUM
OBX's first legal distillery (2015) by brewery veterans. Flagships: Kill Devil Silver, Pecan, Gold. Limited Shipwreck Series, Solstice editions, Angels’ Share fundraiser. At 510 Budleigh St., Manteo.

TRIO
My top pick: stellar appetizers like Charcuterie or Cheese Board. Extensive wines; Rosé flight pairs with Pear & Beet Salad (pears, beets, fennel, Humboldt Fog goat cheese, pistachios, honey poppyseed vinaigrette). Addictive onion dip, dark chocolate goat cheese cheesecake. Unique retail ingredients.

BEYOND OBX RESTAURANTS
Foodies: Visit Hatteras Saltworks and Outer Banks Seafood Festival.
HATTERAS SALTWORKS
Brian, Shaena, and Declan McMahon craft mineral-rich sea salt via innovative solar process. Tours by appointment reveal 550 feet of pipes harvesting saltwater.

Stock up—it's transformative for cooking. Book via website.
OUTER BANKS SEAFOOD FESTIVAL
Plan around this annual event (8th in 2019): sample world-class seafood, drinks, and celebrate local fishermen.
