In alignment with health guidelines, all passengers must wear face coverings onboard in seating areas and on deck. The NCDOT has implemented enhanced cleaning protocols, social distancing measures in waiting areas, and hand sanitizer stations at ticket windows and onboard vessels to ensure a safe journey.
Unlike standard vehicle ferries on the Hatteras-Ocracoke route, the Ocracoke Express is a passengers-only service traveling at twice the speed, docking directly at Silver Lake Harbor. Reservations are accepted, with fares applying (vehicle ferries remain free). Service runs seven days a week seasonally. Hatteras Terminal offers 110 first-come, first-served parking spots, plus 5 overnight spaces.
Each trip accommodates up to 149 passengers, crossing Pamlico Sound from Hatteras Village to Ocracoke Village. Dining, attractions, and shops are within walking distance from Silver Lake Harbor, offering stunning waterfront views. A free island tram provides a 30-minute loop with 8 stops. Bike and golf cart rentals are available near the terminal.
Book reservations by calling 1-800-BY-FERRY or online at ferry.ncdot.gov. Check in at least 20 minutes before departure. Small carry-ons, backpacks, and purses are allowed. Concessions and drinks available onboard. The N.C. Department of Transportation Ferry Division leases the vessel M/V Martha's Vineyard Express from Seastreak Marine in New Jersey.
Note: The Ferry System also operates a free vehicle ferry from Hatteras to northern Ocracoke (about 1-hour crossing plus 15-20 minute drive to village), on a first-come, first-served basis.
