Epic Catfish Fishing in Chattanooga: Expert Charters on the Tennessee River
Seeing a massive catfish at the Tennessee Aquarium is impressive, but reeling one in on 10-pound test line is an exhilarating challenge, shares Coast Guard captain and renowned fishing guide Richard Simms. As owner of Scenic City Fishing Charters, Simms has guided hundreds of anglers—men and women alike—to hook crappie, largemouth bass, and more. His true specialty? The legendary blue catfish lurking in the Tennessee River's depths.
Most charters operate within Chattanooga city limits, just 15 miles up- or downstream from Chickamauga Dam. Clients often fish with views of the downtown Aquarium. A local native, Simms brings deep knowledge of these waters and marine life. Holding a degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Management and with years at the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, his expertise is unmatched.
"The Tennessee River around Chattanooga is uniquely productive and diverse," Simms explains. "It's a catfish factory—catches are practically guaranteed most of the year." Routine hauls include 5- to 10-pounders; 10- to 20-pound fish are common, with annual 30- to 50-pound trophies. "My client's record? A 75-pound monster holding a line-class world record," he adds.
