Samantha Brown on Why You Should Take All Your Vacation Days: Expert Insights
Research shows that taking time off can lead to promotions, better health, and even personal milestones like finding love later in life—though the latter is anecdotal. Beyond cocktails and scenic views, vacations deliver lasting rewards.
Yet, Americans left approximately 705 million vacation days unused last year. While usage has improved since 2014's low, there's still progress to be made.
To encourage more time away—especially on National Plan for Vacation Day—Project: Time Off partnered with travel expert Samantha Brown, host of PBS's Places to Love (now in season 2). Travelzoo spoke with her about vacation benefits, favorite moments from her show, and family travel with kids obsessed with Moana.

Travelzoo: Studies indicate vacations benefit careers, with more promotions, bonuses, and raises for those who take time off. Yet many fear seeming unproductive. How to overcome that?
Samantha Brown: On my former Travel Channel show 50/50, we'd surprise people with instant trips. Their first call was to the boss, who always responded enthusiastically: “Go!” Coworkers cheered too, saying things like “They deserve it.” Vacations refresh you, bringing fresh perspectives and positivity back to the team—bosses recognize this.
TZ: A key tip for National Plan for Vacation Day is scheduling trips early to ensure they happen. Do you use this?
SB: Yes, and research backs it: Planning alone triggers anticipation, boosting happiness even before departure.

TZ: Any trips you're excited for in 2019?
SB: Our first Disney World visit, as one six-year-old insisted on being called Moana for a year. They love animals, so Animal Kingdom is a must. For summer, a Danube river cruise—perfect for relaxing, with everything handled.
TZ: First cruise for the kids?
SB: We did the Rhine last summer. My five-year-old tired of history tours, but they adored the castles everywhere. Search Google Maps for blue rectangles—pools! In Germany and Switzerland, affordable family fun with slides and parks.

TZ: Teasers for Places to Love season 2?
SB: I spotlight 'B-side' cities—overlooked gems with vibrant people, food, music, and history. Viewers shift from 'Why there?' to 'I want to go!'
TZ: Your HONfest promo in Baltimore looks amazing.
SB: Epic beehive hair! HONfest celebrates Baltimore's working women legacy with fun and authenticity.
TZ: Other favorites?
SB: Christchurch, New Zealand, post-2011 earthquake. Gap Filler artists created joy, like Dance-o-mat: Plug your phone into a washing machine for a public dance floor.
TZ: Oman still on your list?
SB: Top of the bucket list. After years in travel, dreaming keeps the passion alive.
TZ: Perfect reason to plan for next National Plan for Vacation Day.
