5 Essential Travel Tips and Reminders from a Seasoned Traveler
Even seasoned travelers can benefit from practical reminders. Here are five lessons from my recent trip—what I did right, and what I'd do differently next time.
1) Double-Check Your Flight Schedule and All Changes
You may have booked months ago, but schedules change. Review every update for time and day. On my return from Europe, I missed a one-day delay on my connecting flight, stranding me overnight in Amsterdam. Airlines should notify you of major shifts, but always verify yourself to avoid surprises.
2) Stay Calm and Prepared for Unexpected Layovers
If plans derail, apps like HotelTonight save the day. Hotels offload unsold rooms at discounts—we scored a king-bed suite with airport shuttle, WiFi, and coffee for $72. I binge-watched The Man in the High Castle on my iPad. Keep receipts; I was reimbursed for the hotel, dinner, and breakfast.
3) Pack Your Smartphone for Connectivity
No international plan? No problem. Use free WiFi at hotels, airports, and cafes in airplane mode for browsing and texting. That's how I booked my Amsterdam hotel from Milan airport. Plus, it's an excellent camera.
4) Document Rentals with Photos
Before driving off and upon return, photograph the car thoroughly. This proved a pre-existing headlight crack wasn't our fault, saving us a $230 charge.

5) Embrace the Adventure—Say Yes!
Travel demands patience and spontaneity. Try inkfish with white beans? Delicious. Two desserts? Absolutely. Gelato twice daily? Why not!
