Essential Costa Rica Packing List: 10 Must-Haves from a Recent Traveler
Traveling to Costa Rica offers endless adventures—from whitewater rafting and hiking to birdwatching and beach relaxation. With diverse activities, packing the right items is key. Drawing from my recent trip, here's a curated list of 10 essentials to ensure you're prepared.
10 Must-Pack Items for Your Costa Rica Trip
1. Rain Gear
Nearly 50% of Costa Rica is rainforest. To explore its vibrant flora, wildlife, and birds without discomfort, pack a breathable, 100% waterproof jacket with a hood. Opt for quick-dry pants for added versatility in humid conditions.
2. Waterproof Hiking Shoes or Boots
For rainforest hikes, choose closed-toe waterproof shoes or boots—many tours prohibit open-toe sandals. Tennis shoes work too, but bring a spare pair to rotate while others dry.

3. Water Shoes or Sandals
Adventures like whitewater rafting and tubing mean wet feet on rocky terrain. Protect them with dedicated water shoes you won't mind getting soaked.
4. Sun Protection
Beyond rainforests, Costa Rica boasts sunny beaches. Pack long-sleeve shirts, hats, and high-SPF sunscreen, even for shaded activities.
5. Waterproof Video Camera or GoPro
Capture rafting waves, parrot flocks, howler monkeys, sloths, or zorbing thrills. A waterproof model is ideal for action shots.

6. U.S. Dollars in Small Bills
Many vendors, taxis, and restaurants accept USD. Carry $1 and $5 bills for tips, bargaining, and small purchases.
7. Binoculars
Spot elusive wildlife like howler monkeys from afar. Listen for calls, then scan treetops for movement.

8. Lightweight Jacket
Cloud and rainforests can turn cool. Layer a fleece or jacket under your rain gear for comfort.
9. Sense of Adventure
Costa Rica transcends beaches—hike volcanoes, kayak oceans, zip-line canopies, or soak in hot springs. Resorts offer tours; consider splitting time between beach and rainforest.

10. Departure Tax
Expect a ~$29 USD exit tax (not always included in airfare), payable in USD, colones, or Visa (with ~$15 extra fee). Fees are approximate and may change; verify current rates.
