Miriam Porter, award‑winning journalist and seasoned travel writer, shares practical ways to enjoy Orlando on a budget.
As a single mom traveling with my son Noah, I’ve learned that smart budgeting doesn’t mean missing out on the magic that Orlando offers. Here are my tried‑and‑tested strategies for a cost‑effective yet unforgettable Orlando getaway.

Save With Advance Ticket Purchases From Visit Orlando

Book theme parks and attractions online ahead of time. Visit Orlando’s website offers discounted tickets to top sites like WonderWorks, Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf, Dinosaur World, and The Wheel at ICON Park. Visiting before 4 p.m. can also yield lower rates.
Book Transportation & Accommodations in Advance and Online

Reserve your lodging and transportation four to six months ahead to lock in lower rates. Hotel room prices rise as occupancy climbs. Car rentals and flights often have seasonal promotions—my best flight deal was secured around the holidays.
Travel during school breaks or weekdays to keep costs down, if your schedule permits.
Consider a Condo, Villa or Townhouse Rental

Large families can benefit from a vacation rental, cutting room costs and enabling home‑style meals.
Make Some Meals Yourself…
Instead of dining out for every meal, stock the mini‑fridge with pre‑prepared items—fruit, bagels, cereals, oatmeal, hummus, veggies, nuts, and premade salads. This allows a special dinner out without compromising the budget.
…and Don’t Leave Without Snacks
Pack portable snacks to avoid pricey park vending. My vegan staples—granola bars, crackers, nuts, seeds, and fruit—keep us satisfied and save us money.
Take Shuttles to Theme Parks…

Many Orlando hotels provide complimentary shuttles to Disney and Universal parks, eliminating parking fees. If a resort requires advance booking, plan accordingly. For example, staying at Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort gave us easy access to EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Disney Springs via free buses and water taxis.
…or Save on Transportation With Ride‑Share Services
Uber and other ride‑share options can be cheaper than cabs or rental cars for short trips within the city.
Visit Free (and Almost Free) Orlando Attractions

Free and low‑cost attractions are a budget’s best friend. Winter Park’s Rollins Museum of Art offers free admission year‑round. Disney Springs welcomes visitors with free entrance, live music, and the LEGO Store’s play tables. Wekiva Island’s entrance is only $1 per person, offering hiking, boardwalks, and picnicking.
More Ways to Save at Walt Disney World Resort
Multi‑day tickets lower the per‑day cost. Utilize FastPass+ and Extra Magic Hours for an efficient park experience. Outside the parks, Disney‑themed merchandise is cheaper at grocery stores and pharmacies. Character dining can be enjoyed at Garden Grove in the Swan and Dolphin Resort instead of pricier park restaurants.
More Ways to Save at Universal Orlando Resort
Universal’s multi‑day tickets offer savings, and the unlimited soft‑drink package with a reusable cup keeps refreshment costs low. We bypassed the official photo package, instead capturing our own memories with fellow guests—saving both money and photos.
Enjoy your Orlando vacation!
