PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL | Annual (typically early to mid-January)
The Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) is a globally recognized showcase of top world cinema, often foreshadowing Oscar nominations. As one of North America's largest and most prestigious festivals, it draws over 136,000 attendees for screenings, glamorous parties, director and actor Q&A sessions, industry panels, and the star-studded Awards Gala, where A-list celebrities and Academy nominees shine on the red carpet.
NATIVE FILM FEST | Annual (typically late February to early March)
Fifteen years ago, Michael Hammond, former Executive Director of the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum, observed the rise of young Native filmmakers. 'Palm Springs is a film festival town,' he noted. 'We wanted a platform to share Native perspectives with local audiences.' Thus, the Native Film Fest was launched. Held annually, it spotlights films addressing Indigenous themes like land rights, sovereignty, language preservation, and cultural traditions.
AMERICAN DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL (AmDocs) | Annual (typically late March to early April)
Founded by Teddy Grouya, AmDocs celebrates documentary filmmaking and independent storytellers who illuminate real-world issues. Launching in 2012 with Oscar-winner Oliver Stone honored on opening night for his documentary Comandante, the festival has grown rapidly. Past luminaries include Dionne Warwick, Peter Coyote, and Peter Bogdanovich. It introduced animated documentaries in 2013 and focuses on themes like 'Seeing the Bigger Picture' in recent years.
ARTHUR LYONS FILM NOIR FESTIVAL | Annual (typically mid-May)
Launched in 2000 by mystery author and Palm Springs resident Arthur Lyons and his wife Barbara, this festival honors the iconic film noir genre. It features a mix of landmark and rare vintage black-and-white classics brimming with postwar cynicism, suspense, sexuality, and crime. Hosted by the Palm Springs Cultural Center at Camelot Theatres—one of the few venues still equipped for 35mm and 70mm prints—it often includes Q&As with original stars and special events. Renowned for unearthing long-lost films, it remains one of the oldest noir festivals.
PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL SHORTFEST | Annual (typically late June)
Founded by Celebrity Mayor Sonny Bono in 1990 to boost tourism, PSIFF expanded in 1995 to include ShortFest, addressing the need for exposure among emerging short filmmakers. North America's largest short film festival and market, it showcases international gems and serves as a launchpad for new talent. Highlights include the Filmmaker Forum with pro tips on topics like building Hitchcockian tension or casting, plus networking parties with industry influencers.
