Introducing Porter Fox: Editor of Nowhere Magazine

Introducing Porter Fox: Editor of Nowhere Magazine

Hometown: Brooklyn, New York.

Occupation: Editor of Nowhere Magazine.

Favorite destinations: The desert.

Dying to visit: South Pacific.

Bizarre travel rituals: Staying up 24 hours on arrival to beat jet lag.

In-flight relaxation regime: Romantic comedies.

Always in carry-on: iPad and Valium.

Concierge or DIY? Bartenders and shopkeepers rarely let me down.

See it all or take it easy? I'd rather sit in a lawn chair for three days in a neighborhood in Istanbul than follow a guide book.

Drive or be driven? Drive. But I'd rather walk or bike. The best is by boat. Never let someone choose your path. (Unless you're in the mountains. Or the desert.)

Travel hero: Blaise Cendrars, Robert Byron, Rory Stewart, Michel Butor, and Paul Violi.

Weirdest thing seen on travels: Three hundred Canadian tourists who paid $800 each to sit in a fenced-in, all-inclusive Cuban resort.

Best hotel amenity: A maharaja costume at a haveli in Rajasthan, India. I tried it on and it fit perfectly. The staff played along and treated me like a king all night. Then I tried to kick everyone out and make the palace my own and they made me take it off.

I dream about my meal at a hummus stand in southeastern Turkey. It tasted like melted peanut butter.

Everywhere I go, I check out the local industry (i.e. where real people hang out).

When I arrive in a new place, I learn the lay of the land by talking to people unconnected with the tourism trade.

I always bring home objects I found.

If I never return to the Dominican Republic, it'll be too soon because a guy put a gun to my head for about an hour.

I travel for the prestige.
