Discover Amanda Marsalis: Fathom's Guest Instagrammer Capturing South of France Beauty
We just wrapped up our first list of Fathom's 24 Best Travelers on Instagram, and we're already taking notes for the 2015 edition. We're thrilled that Fathom contributor Amanda Marsalis, a photographer and director who shoots for the likes of Monocle, The New York Times Magazine, and Vogue, is taking over our @FathomWaytoGo Instagram feed. A habitual traveler of the envy-inducing variety, her photos are beautiful and real without being precious. We wanted a little more behind-the-lens information about her.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I'm a photographer and director. I began taking photos as a teenager going to punk shows in the Midwest where my family had moved from the Bay Area. My mother was a flight attendant and my father a pilot, so at a very early age I was traveling constantly and always had my camera with me. I went to school at the California College of the Arts in Oakland, and immediately began working as a photographer. My first feature film, Echo Park, premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival in June. I live in LA now but I am always at home in an airport or on a plane.
How would you describe your photography style?
Intimate. I always try to show the beauty in anything I do.
What do you love most about photographing on the road?
I think traveling in general causes you to be more aware of your surroundings, always paying attention. It is a great way to avoid being on autopilot. I love taking it all in each day. Learning the light in a new place. Visiting cities and towns I've never been to before and discovering new things. For me, it is the best way to live life!
