The Burning of Zozobra

Zozobra, or "Old Man Gloom," is a massive marionette effigy burned at the start of Fiestas de Santa Fe. Symbolizing the release of worries, its incineration kicks off the festivities.
The 93rd Burning of Will Shuster’s Zozobra occurs Friday, September 1, 2017, before Labor Day. Year four of the Decades Project revives the 1950s Rock 'n' Roll era. Gates open at 3:00 p.m., entertainment at 7:00 p.m., burning at 9:30 p.m. (weather permitting).

Experience autumn at El Rancho de las Golondrinas living museum. Grind sorghum syrup on a burro-driven mill, press cider, pick pumpkins, stomp grapes, craft cornhusk dolls, or roll tortillas. This acclaimed event, voted #2 Best Fall Harvest Festival by USA Today readers, runs September 30–October 1, 2017, 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.

Since 1712, Fiesta de Santa Fe honors the 1692 reconquest. Check the schedule for pre-Fiesta entertainment starting August 27, mariachi at the Santa Fe Opera, and plaza food booths offering green chile cheeseburgers to cotton candy. Don't miss the Children's Pet Parade (Desfile de los Niños) on September 9 at 10:00 a.m., or the Historical/Hysterical Parade on September 10 at 1:00 p.m.
