4 Compelling Reasons to Discover Nevis: The Caribbean's Hidden Gem
This year, I suggested, “Let’s go to Nevis.” My husband replied, “Nevis? Why there?”
Here’s why Nevis is worth seeking out:
Effortless and Scenic Access
Daily flights from Miami to St. Kitts make Nevis highly accessible, especially for South Florida residents or fans of American Airlines and United. The 3-hour flight lands with a thrilling tarmac deplaning experience, reminiscent of a private jet arrival.
Grab essentials at the airport’s tiny duty-free liquor shop before a short shuttle to the ferry. The 35-minute open-air boat ride to Nevis offers stunning views and a perfect introduction to the island.
Luxury at Four Seasons Resort
With a Four Seasons resort, Nevis delivers world-class exclusivity and luxury. The brand’s choice of this expansive island underscores its appeal. A Travelzoo deal for four nights at the price of three made it irresistible.
Fewer than 200 rooms in low-rise buildings offer beach or mountain views. Our suite was a 60-second walk to the adults-only reflection pool and 90 seconds to a often-empty beach, where staff provided smoothie shots, cocktails, and chilled water.
Though not golfers, we admired the championship course with panoramic views of the Caribbean, St. Kitts, and Nevis Peak. Exploring nearby trails led me accidentally onto the challenging red course—a breathtaking run through rainforest (spotting monkeys), past luxurious villas rumored to host celebrities like Oprah, Britney Spears, Beyoncé, and Jay-Z.
“Sweet P,” who braided my hair beachside, shared tales of styling Kelly Ripa and her daughter Lola. The staff’s pride in their island inspired us to venture beyond the resort.
Charming Dining with Island Dogs

At Bananas restaurant, atop a historic plantation estate, we met Jodie (a dog sharing my name, with an “e”) and nine other friendly pups. This lush spot blends sugar plantation heritage with a vast rum selection and Caribbean comfort food.
The most scenic meal was at Golden Rock Plantation Inn, perched near Nevis Peak with 200-year-old grounds. Clear nights reveal Antigua and other islands. Restored gardens make it ideal for groups, weddings, or romantic evenings.
The Legendary Killer Bee at Sunshine’s
Nevis buzzed with talk of the Killer Bee at Sunshine’s, a 5-minute beach walk from Four Seasons. This rum-passion fruit-honey-lime-club soda cocktail is refreshingly potent. Chatting with owner Smoothie, we learned of visiting athletes amid college sports memorabilia, including our Florida Gators gear.
Nevis suits adventurers, families, and couples seeking pampering, great food, drinks, and laughter. This off-the-beaten-path Caribbean gem deserves discovery—even if insiders prefer keeping it secret.
