One-Tank Getaway: Pristine Gulf Coast Beaches Along Louisiana's Creole Nature Trail
Planning a staycation or family bonding experience? Discover the stunning beaches of Cameron Parish along the Creole Nature Trail in Southwest Louisiana—a perfect, accessible escape.
Last summer, my brother's birthday wish was a family grill-out on Rutherford Beach. While I've mainly visited for shelling with guests, this remote, rustic spot offers unmatched serenity.

Surprisingly accessible, Rutherford Beach is just an hour or less from Calcasieu Parish towns, bringing the Louisiana Gulf Coast within easy reach.
Its unspoiled remoteness is the draw. With long summer days in Southwest Louisiana, families from nearby Iowa, LA, can enjoy a picnic supper and Gulf relaxation—using less than a tank of gas for a refreshing break from routine.

We departed Lake Charles at 4 p.m., arriving by 5 p.m. to join family. As the men fired up the grill to Creedence Clearwater Revival tunes, the kids and I hunted seashells, built sandcastles, and battled the Gulf breeze with a kite.

Dinner was simple yet satisfying: hot dogs, grilled veggies, and juicy watermelon for dessert.

Nearby anglers landed massive redfish. We tried our luck fishing—though our weights fell short, it's prime bonding time, catch or no catch.

We savored a breathtaking sunset before packing up for home.
