About Forest Retreat
Forest Retreat is a meticulously restored 1814 estate that once served as the home of Thomas Metcalfe, the 10th Governor of Kentucky. Designed by Metcalfe himself, the property spans 17 landscaped acres along Kentucky’s most scenic stretch of highway between Lexington and Maysville. The estate is recognized as a historic district, encompassing the 1806 Tavern House, stone barn, Main House, Carriage House, Guest House, and a cemetery where the Metcalfe and Asbury families are interred. The grounds also honor the 1954 Kentucky Derby champion Determine, whose grave marker is on site.
Architecturally, Forest Retreat exemplifies the refined Federal style popular from 1790 to 1840, featuring period furnishings and décor that transport guests back in time. Modern amenities have been thoughtfully integrated to ensure comfort without compromising historic integrity. Highlights include the “Governor’s Bedroom,” where Governor Metcalfe once slept, and a dining room that hosted President Andrew Jackson on his way to the White House. Renowned statesman Henry Clay once described the property as a “veritable Forest Retreat.”
