San Francisco's Iconic Cable Cars: Complete Guide to Routes, Tips, Fares & Must-Knows
San Francisco's cable cars are a magnet for tourists, with visitors far outnumbering locals. But don't let that deter you—it's an unforgettable experience we highly recommend. Best of all, it's an affordable thrill, making it one of the top budget-friendly activities in the city.
The limited network explains why locals rarely ride: only three lines operate today, turning cable cars into a quintessential tourist attraction rather than daily transport.
The operating lines are:
- Powell/Mason Line – Green Line
- Powell/Hyde Line – Blue Line
- California Line – Red Line
The California Line runs east-west along California Street. The other two run south-north from Powell & Market Street to Fisherman's Wharf via different paths.
Powell/Mason: Powell & Market to Taylor & Bay (under 20 minutes).
Powell/Hyde: Powell & Market to Hyde & Beach (about 20 minutes).
California: Drum to Van Ness (just over 15 minutes).
Our first ride crammed us inside on a bench, views blocked by standing crowds and rain-streaked windows—not the glamorous experience imagined.
Pro Tip: Ride at dusk when crowds thin out. Snag an outer-facing bench for that thrilling 'hanging off' moment on the hills.

Being packed in revealed the gripmen's manual skill: gripping and releasing the underground cable by hand. Only 30% pass the rigorous training—it's demanding work.
San Francisco's cable cars are the world's only remaining originals. With their future uncertain, every visitor should ride—historic, iconic, and pure SF magic.

How to Ride a Cable Car in San Francisco
Cable cars operate 19 hours daily, every 10 minutes. For crowd-free photos, catch early runs:
- Powell/Mason: 6:30am–12:20am
- Powell/Hyde: 6:00am–12:20am
- California: 6:20am–11:30pm
Board at turnarounds or stops every two blocks (look for "Cable Car Stop" signs). Limited seats; outer standing spots are exhilarating but dizzying. Arrive early or choose quieter California Line for seats.
Tip: Skip long lines at Powell & Market—board midway or at the far end.
Best Views: Powell/Hyde offers the most scenic route, passing Lombard Street. Sit right-side from Powell & Market or left from Hyde & Beach.
