Discover Sombrerete: Zacatecas' Magical Town & Colonial Heritage

Named for the resemblance its founder, Spaniard Juan de Tolosa found between the hill and the hat he and his men wore, Sombrerete is currently one of the Pueblos Magicos (Magical Towns) of the state of Zacatecas.

Among elegant colonial buildings and multiple churches built during the viceregal era, Sombrerete Pueblo Mágico offers activities that range from walking its streets in search of tasting its exquisite cuisine like the famous “Brujitas”, to enter their temples, completely different from each other.

For years, Sombrerete was an important mining settlement from which gold, silver, tin, mercury, and lead were extracted. This attracted the arrival of visitors from different corners of the world and investments from wealthy families who, without thinking twice, moved to this growing city.

From that bonanza remain its magnificent buildings, the visible elegance of each of its streets, and the treasures you can still see when you go into its entrails either by day or by night, but in Sombrerete the treasures seem to shine even brighter when the sun has set.

Currently, the nightlife offers different bars with first-class mixology, as well as an endless list of handcrafted beers that are served in its bars. You can go out quietly to explore the downtown area, you will be surprised to see it full of other travelers and locals who gather to have a good time, especially on Fridays and Saturdays.

As far as lodging is concerned, you will find all kinds of accommodations, from small family hotels to boutique hotels that have been set up inside old houses and preserve the spirit of those fascinating constructions; staying in the downtown area is an excellent option since the costs are quite affordable and the proximity helps a lot.

At 170 kilometers ( 105 miles ) from Zacatecas capital, Sombrerete is a high city, little more than the Mexican capital. Its altitude exceeds 2,300 meters ( 6,500 feet) above sea level and the climate is dry and temperate most of the time, which makes walking through its streets very pleasant.

In winter the situation changes a bit, as it is likely to encounter temperatures below 5° C ( 41° F) and even snow. Don't worry too much about the rain, as it only usually happens between July and September.
