Discover Mazunte: Oaxaca's Magical Coastal Town

The place of the sea turtlesMazunte is part of the San Pedro Pochutla Municipality and is 22 kilometers southeast from Oaxaca City. This place is famous for taking care of sea turtles and many other environmental educational projects, both on a national and international level.

 

Here, we can find an ecological facility with several areas dedicated to the conservation of different sea turtles species such as: prieta, laúds and carey. It is noteworthy to mention that for a long time this town was an important sea hunting place in the country, but as the consequences of this hunting started to be noticeable, many projects arose to protect sealife.

 

What can we find in Mazunte?This Pueblo Magico is surrounded by beautiful beaches where you can practice diving and snorkel. It is also internationally famous for the Jazz Festival that takes place at the end of November and for its diverse cultural and gastronomic activities.

 

Talking about eating, you can try a big array of different dishes with fish and other seafood as the protagonist. Try the mole negro as well, tamales de iguana or caldo de piedra, don’t forget to pair it with mezcal, a traditional alcoholic drink.
