Xochipila Ceremonial Center: A Sacred Zapotec Heritage Site

One place you should explore in Xicotepec is El Centro Ceremonial Xochipila (The Xochipila Ceremonial Center), the only vestige of the town's pre-Hispanic city, is located on one side of the center between the streets of Porfirio Díaz and Santa Rita.
It is a site that emanates mysticism by combining various natural elements, ravines with caves, abundant vegetation, rock formations, and the union of the streams that make the place a sacred site. It is dedicated to the Zapotec god Xochipilli, the god of the sun who wears a painted mask around his mouth representing a butterfly.
When walking you can see a rock five meters ( 16 feet ) high with an elliptical base of 11 meters ( 36 feet ) in diameter, it is accompanied by two rocks that coincide with the figure of the Codex Xólotl, where three stones are shown together in front of a cave and the name.
Xochipila means “Flower of a girl, Princess of Flowers”, although for many historians it is “Flower that sprouts from water”. This center is used by many indigenous groups that gather for the celebration of Juan Techachalco.
